외국인 직접투자 기업의 입지결정에서 나타난 지역 기업과의 파급효과 측도에 관한 소고 = A Study on the Measure of the Spillover Effects in the Location Choice of FDIs

In recent years, when multinationals choose their location in the host country, they consider the regional availability of innovation and value creation more than the cost minimization. This trend in the location choice increases the importance of research on spillover effects among companies in the same region. Based on the index of Ellison and Glaeser (1997), this paper proposes a method of identifying the relative spillover effects and analyzes the geographic patterns and location choice type of both the source country and industry with the identified spillover effects. The analysis shows that the location choice of multinational companies in Korea’s main export industry, are relatively much affected by the spillover effects of domestic companies. In particular, however, the spillover effects of domestic companies in the parts and materials industry of the main export industry is having a relatively weak impact on multinational companies’ choice of location. The geographic pattern of multinationals by source countries shows different each other in terms of spillover effects and natural advantage effects. The Japanese multinationals show relative omnidirectional location choice and investment patterns regarding geographical distribution and industry.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 외국인직접투자기업은 입지를 결정할 때 과거와는 달리 비용최소화를 가져오는 지역보다는 기술혁신과 가치창출이 가능한 지역인지를 많이 고려하고 있다. 이러한 입지결정요인의 변화는 입지선택연구에서 지역 내 기업간 상호작용에 관한 연구의 중요성을 높였다. 본 논문은 Ellison and Glaeser (1997)이 제안한 산업의 집중지표를 응용하여 산업간 상호작용의 파급효과를 상대적으로 식별하는 방법을 제시하였고 한국내로의 외국인직접투자기업들의 입지정보를 이용하여 상대적으로 식별된 파급효과의 지리적 패턴과 국가별 산업별 입지선택유형을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과 한국에 투자한 외국인직접투자기업들은 한국수출주력산업 분야에서 국내기업과의 상호작용이 그들의 입지결정에 상대적으로 영향을 크게 미치고 있었으나 그 중 수출품 주력상품의 소재를 생산하는 분야에 속한 외국인투자기업들은 오히려 상호작용 효과가 크지 않은 것으로 드러났다. 외국인직접투자기업들의 국적별로 입지에서의 지리적 패턴을 동질성검증을 통해 살펴보면 국가별로 서로 다르며 특히 일본의 경우 지역과 산업에 걸쳐 전방위적인 투자성향이 다른 국가에 비해 두드러진 것으로 나타났다.
