      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

      The purpose of this study is to provide basic data needed in the health care for middle school students by examination of the level of stress and physical symptoms of the subjects and measurement of correlation between two.
      The subjects of this study were 461 middle school students.
      The data colletion with questionnaires was performed for a month, September 2002.
      For the measurement of stress level, the modification method of stress measurement technique by K. H. Kim and J. K. Park which was devided 8 sub-factors after factor analysis was used for this study.
      And for the measurement of physical symptoms, the modification method of Adolescent Symptom Checklist and Symptom Pattern Scale was used.
      Colleted data was proceded computer by SPSS program and analyzed statistically by mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient
      The results of this study are as follows.
      1) The subjects showed the highest stress level when they failed exams, the second when they were scolded by parents and the thud when parents interfered in their studies and behaviors.
      Therefore the studies was revealed as the highest stress factor for the subjects.
      2) Stress level of the subjects was verified according to gender and grade.
      The results were the stress level according to gender made a significant difference(F=28.813, p=.000) but according to grade didn't(F=.707, p=.494).
      Neither did interaction between gender and grade(F=1.083, p=.339).
      3) As for sub-factors, the stress level of the subjects made a significant difference according to gender in these sub-factors like 'stress related Family', 'stress related Friend who has same sex', 'stress related Self', 'stress related Use of spare time', 'stress related Studies' and 'stress related Relation with teachers'.
      And the stress level made a significant difference according to interaction between grade and gender in these two sub-factors like 'stress related Family' and 'stress related Studies'.
      4) The physical symptom which got the highest score was 'be in a fret' (M 3.52, SD 1.35), the second 'difficulty of getting up in the morning '(M 3.13, SD 1.58) and the third 'headache'(M 3.00, SD 1.31).
      This results showed the score between 'rarely experienced' (3 points) and 'occasionally experienced'(4 points).
      5) The physical symptoms were verified according to gender and grade.
      The results are the physical symptom according to gender made a significant difference. That is, female students showed more physical symptoms than male students(F=32.114, p=.000).
      And the physical symptoms according to grade made a significant difference. That is, the 3rd grade of middle school students showed the most physical symptoms(F=5.571, p=.004).
      But the physical symptoms according to interaction between grade and gender didn't make a significant difference(F=1.713, p=.182).
      6) There was a positive correlation between stress level and physical symptoms(r=.571, p=.000).
      It meant that the higher stress level, the more physical symptoms.
      In conclusion, the highest stress level of the subjects was the sub-factor of 'stress related Studies'.
      This was expected results because they were faced with entrance exam for high school and college, which was the most important task for Korean students
      And female students showed the higher stress level and more physical symptoms than male students.
      According to grade, the middle school students of the 3rd grade showed the most physical symptoms.
      Therefore, in school health, stress management for female students and the students of the 3rd grade are more required.
