The purpose of this study is to identify the status of progressive parties through studying the changes of those parties in Korea.
The main part of this study consists of 4 chapters as follows.

The progressive party, which has the relative concept to the conservative party in Korea, advocates not the Marx-Leninism but the Social democracy or the Democratic Socialism. Especially, the progressive parties in Korea are based on the moderate socialism, democracy and nationalism.
The progressive movement in Korea, which had begun under the japanese colonial rule, was continued by the party activity. The progressive parties have experienced the depressed period 3 times from the 8·15 Liberation to the collapse of the 4th Republic.
But under the 5th Republic, the progressive parties entered on the system-accepting step. Because the activities of progressive parties were accepted more or less to absorb those into the system. Neverthless the progressive parties are estimated that they are the government patronized parties or they are short of the practical will in that time.
The progressive parties in Korea have two limitations which are the weakness of mass supporting base and the indistinctness of ideological direction. But now the necessity of the progressive parties is increasing more and more in Korea.
In conclusion, as the parliamentarism is developed and the party politics is settled with the democratization, it will be possible that the progressive parties develop to speak for the estranged.
