This study aims to reestablish the epistemological status of art by focusing on the concept of 'aesthetic rationality (ästhetische Rationalität)' - a core but relatively overlooked concept in Theodor W. Adorno's Aesthetic Theory. While existing Adorno research has primarily concentrated on culture industry theory or critique of enlightenment within a social-critical context, this dissertation presents a new theoretical framework for art's capacity for truth cognition by examining the concept of aesthetic rationality from a purely aesthetic dimension.
The central problematic of this research is as follows: How can art, in Adorno's philosophy, approach truth in a manner different from conceptual cognition? To answer this question, this dissertation introduces the concept of ‘aesthetically felt rationality.’ This represents art's unique mode of cognition that transcends the traditional dichotomy between sensibility and reason, signifying the capacity of artworks to express and make cognizable truth in a non-conceptual manner.
Let us give one example of the meaning that 'aesthetically felt rationality' possesses. If we ask ‘why must this note, this chord appear at a particular passage of a musical work?’ or ‘why must this form exist at a specific point in a painting, and why must this form be painted with this color and such brushstrokes?’, how would we answer? ‘As the composer and painter pleased’? In works that have reached a certain level that we could call ‘artworks,’ are such decisions by the artist, the temporal and spatial composition of the work - though we might easily think so - made arbitrarily, according to the individual producer's taste? No. When we appreciate great artworks, we come to ‘understand’ why a particular melody or chord appears at a specific passage, and why specific forms and colors are positioned at particular locations. When we listen to good performances, we go beyond ‘understanding’ why the interpreter performs a particular passage with such breathing and flow, such tempo, to feel a kind of necessity there. That note or chord, that form or color had to be in that place, and that passage had to be performed with such dynamics, such expression, such tempo - this is the necessity we feel.
But this is not merely a story about the listener's experience. Pianist Alexandre Tharaud, when discussing Ravel's music, speaks about the performer's sense of necessity: “From pressing the first note, one must aim for the last note.” When pressing the first note, the performer comes to anticipate all subsequent notes, flow, expression, dynamics, even how the final note will (should) be performed. In other words, the success or failure of a performance is determined when the first note is pressed. And the performer also intuits when pressing the first note - whether this performance will be successful or failed. Any musician would empathize with the existence of such ‘intuition.’ But how can we explain this ‘intuition’ ‘in language’ to someone who has never sung or played an instrument? Finding an answer to this question is the subject of this dissertation.
