국문 초록 (Abstract)

독일 청소년문학 작품 <커피우유와 소보로빵(Milchkaffee und Streuselkuchen)>은 다문화 사회로 이행하는 독일에서 이민자 가정이 겪는 차별과 고립, 그리고 침묵의 정서를 담아낸다. 본 연구는 이 작품의 서사 속에서 등장인물들이 선택한 침묵이 어떤 양상을 보이고 어떻게 반복되고 전이되는지를 분석하며, 침묵이 차별에 동조하는 힘으로 작용하거나 여론을 의식한 자기검열로 작용하여 이어지는 양상을 살펴본다. 이를 위해 엘리자베스 노엘레-노이만의 ‘침묵의 나선 이론’을 해석의 틀로 적용하였다. 본 연구는 침묵과 발화의 교차를 등장인물들의 심리적 갈등과 상황적 맥락으로 드러냄으로써, 청소년 독자에게 여론의 불완전성과 침묵의 폭력성, 그리고 발화의 중요성을 일깨우고자 하는 작가의 의도를 밝힌다. 이를 바탕으로 작품이 이민자 담론을 형성하고, 청소년문학의 교육적 기능을 수행하는 방식을 고찰한다.

This study explores how Milchkaffee und Streuselkuchen, a German youth novel by Carolin Philipps, reveals the silencing mechanisms faced by immigrant communities in contemporary German society. Drawing on Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann’s Spiral of Silence theory, the paper analyzes how the novel illustrates the discursive processes by which certain voices are amplified while others are suppressed. Through characters such as silent neighbors, self-censoring immigrants, and those who openly justify anti-immigration sentiment, the narrative captures the ways in which public opinion is shaped by fear of isolation and conformity to perceived majority views.
The novel's portrayal of mass media, public education, and interpersonal interactions highlights how structural and symbolic violence can contribute to a climate in which speaking out becomes socially risky, even for victims of discrimination. The silence chosen by immigrant characters is not merely personal but stems from broader systems of exclusion, surveillance, and fear, making the story a compelling case study of how minority voices are erased from public discourse.
In doing so, the novel not only reflects social reality but also functions as a discursive space that exposes otherwise invisible power relations and invites critical reflection on the ethical responsibilities of society. As such, this study argues that Milchkaffee und Streuselkuchen exemplifies the potential of youth literature to visualize unspoken injustices and engage young readers in the emotional and moral dimensions of multicultural coexistence and social solidarity.
