18대 대선에서 나타난 한국 무당파 유권자의 특성과 행태: 인지적 동원을 중심으로 = The Characteristics and Behaviors of Korean Independent Voters in the 2012 Presidential Election

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the characteristics and behaviors of independent voters in the 2012 Korean Presidential Election. Given the diversity of independent voters, this study categorizes independents into two groups, apartisans and apoliticals, based on cognitive mobilization instead of partisan leaning which has often been used as criteria of dividing independents in most previous studies. This is because voters identifying themselves as independents are likely to put more emphasis on cognition than affect. Our empirical analysis confirms that apartisans who are cognitively mobilized rely heavily on evaluative factors like the ideological and policy positions of political parties in making vote decisions, unlike apoliticals who are not. This study also shows a significant impact of cognitive mobilization on electoral participation, well contrasted with an insignificant influence of partisan leaning. In addition to distinct voting behaviors, given that apartisan voters are relatively well-educated, postmaterial, change-oriented, and young, the increase in apartisan voters is likely to have important implications for the future developments of Korean politics.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

2012년 18대 대선에서 나타난 한국 무당파 유권자들의 특성과 행태를 분석하는 데에 목적이 있는 본 연구에서는 무당파 유권자들의 다양성을 고려하여 이들을 당파적 편향성을 기준으로 하여 세분하고 있는 기존의 연구와는 달리 인지적 동원 여부를 기준으로 인지적 동원이 이루어진 비당파층과 그렇지 않은 비정치층의 두 집단으로 분류하고 있다. 이는 스스로를 무당파라고 밝히고 있는 유권자들은 정서보다는 인지에 더 큰 비중을 두고 있을 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 실제로 경험적 분석을 통하여 대선 후보를 선택함에 있어서 인지적으로 동원되어 있는 비당파층이 그렇지 않은 비정치층과는 달리 정당의 이념적, 정책적 입장과 같은 인지적‧평가적 요인에 크게 의존하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 또한 선거참여에 인지적 동원 요인이 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여주고 있는데, 이는 당파적 편향성의 영향이 유의미하지 않은 것과 좋은 대조를 이루고 있다. 이러한 비당파층 유권자들의 차별적 투표 행태에 더하여 이들이 교육수준이 높고 탈물질적 가치정향을 가지고 있으며 변화 지향적인데다가 젊은 세대에 집중되어 있음을 고려할 때, 무당파 유권자 중에서 많은 비율을 점하고 있는 비당파층 유권자의 증가는 한국정치의 미래 지형 변화에도 중요한 함의를 갖고 있다고 본다.
