The literati in the late Joseon were interested on the choice of residence and discussed the distribution of space, the life in it, and gardening at some length. Some literati operated their house and manor and designed the life in a mansion, while keeping a record of the procedure and contents of construction in documents and paintings. Thanks to these materials, we can see the interests of the literati after the seventeenth century. The representative examples is the case of Kim Su-jeung, Yi Man-bu, and Kwon Seop. They were the literati of decent family who took the life of a hermit in a country village due to the political problems. They tried to construct the place for an ideal life based on the Joseon`s ground. They also expressed the beauty of the mansion they built through poems, writings, and paintings suggesting the aesthetics of housing. The attempts of the literati in the late Joseon to approach the architecture from the perspectives of gardening, literature, and painting reveal the original and various viewpoints on a living space as a synthetic art.
