This paper analyzes the trait of the performance artistry of the method in which shaman ritual treats death in the Hwanghaedo and Pyungando region. NhukGhut, which gives way for the spirit of the dead to the other world, has the structure of a well-plotted drama. Having the perplexities of life and death as the theme, what the Koreans know of the beings of the after world appear on a stage and induce people to take part in the play. Nhukdoori (utterances of a shaman given as those of a deceased spirit), Sajanoli (acting as a Grim Reeper), Gildakum (the cleaning of the cloth, a tool used to represent a path that connects this life and the other), Gilgarhugi (the cutting of long cloth held from each side, which represents the path between this world and the other by shaman's chest), through such dramatic performance ceremonies NhukGhut gives a psychotherapy like effect as if in mental analytics. Death is an event that can totally shake an ordinary life. Those bewildering in the face of death understand the situation through shaman ritual and return to their previous peaceful state. Nhukdoori, which is performed both by the dead and the alive, allows for further communication that was ruptured due to death by becoming the passage, thus makes it possible to vent one's spite. Also through ceremony such as Sajanoli the alive can eventually accept death by re-experiencing death fully expressing one's feelings. And thus we become free from death and perceive life positively, and that is NhukGhut.
