전통 민화 문자도의 현대적 표현에 관한 연구: 시각적 표현과 공예 및 디자인 상품 사례를 중심으로 = A Study of Contemporary Represenions of Traditional Folk Painting Munjado (Character Painting) : Focused on Visual Representation and Craft and Design Product Examples

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전통서민 문화를 대표했던 전통 민화는 우리 선조들이 일상에서 바라던 소망을 자유롭게 표현하여 서민들의 생활을 정서적으로 아름답고 풍요롭게 해주던 실용화이었다. 이 논문은 민화의 이론적 고찰을 통해 우리 민족의 대표적 서민문화로서 서민들의 생활과 실용성을 바탕으로 표현되어온 실용예술이라는 점에서 오늘날 대중예술인 디자인분야와 매우 공통점이 많다는 점을 파악하게 되었다.
오늘날 여러 디자인 분야에서 우리 민족의 민화를 재해석하고, 창조적으로 활용하는 사례들이 늘어나고 있다. 그 가운데 민화 문자도는 우리 민족의 윤리의식을 대중들에게 교화시키려는 목적과 함께 우리 선인들의 염원과 주술성에 대하여 글자와 그림의 조화로움이 뛰어나 민화 중 가장 현대 디자인의 감성과 닮아있다.
이에 디자인 분야에서 전통 민화 문자도를 활용한 작품들이 연구 제작되어 왔다. 그러나 지금까지 개발 된 문자도의 현대적 활용은 조선시대 문자도의 형식에서 크게 벗어나지 못한 채 문자도의 글과 그림을 전통문양으로 인식하여 제작되어오는 한계점이 있다. 또한 앞서 연구되었던 논문에서는 주로 타이포그래피나 캘리그래피에 국한되어 문자도를 바라보거나 연구했기에 문자도의 영역이 매우 축소되어 표현되는 점이 한계로 보여진다.
이에 본 논문은 전통 민화 문자도의 고유한 특색을 살려 타이포그래피나 캘리그래피에 국한되어진 것이 아닌 개성 넘치는 현대 문자도로서 하나의 디자인분야의 발전 방향에 대해 연구 해보고자 한다.
또한 문자도는 한자문화권에서만 보이는 독특한 조형언어라는 인식으로 한글을 소재로 한 문자도의 개발이나 연구가 부족한 실태이다. 이에 이 논문은 전통 민화 문자도의 현대적 디자인 활용을 높이기 위해서는 한글을 활용한 좀 더 다양한 디자인 활용방안이 모색되어져야 할 것으로 생각하여 한글을 소재로 한 작품들을 조사 연구하였다.
본 논문은 민화를 활용하여 현대적인 발전 방안을 모색하고 기존의 제작 기법인 사실적인 한국화 표현기법에서 탈피하여 현대적 감각에 맞게 간결하고 단순화된 디자인으로 재해석하고 있는 현대 작가들의 작품을 시각적 표현 사례와 공예적 표현 사례로 나누어 조사 분석하였다.
또한 시중에서 판매하고 있는 공예적 표현의 제품들 중에서 문자도를 활용한 제품과 한글을 활용하여 제작되는 제품들을 조사 분석하여 연구함으로서 앞으로 우리의 우수
한 전통문화인 민화가 현대적 디자인의 소재로 다양한 연구 개발이 지속적으로 이어져가길 바란다. 또한 본 연구는 한글 문자 디자인의 다양화, 전통문화의 발전적 계승, 가장 한국적인 문화가 세계적인 문화로서 발전되기를 궁극적 목적으로 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Traditional folk paintings representing traditional civilian culture were practical paintings that freely expressed our ancestors’ hope in the daily lives and made and enriched ordinary people’s lives emotionally beautiful. Through theoretical considerations, this paper understood that folk paintings as Korean nation’s representative civilian culture have many commonalities with the design field of today’s public art as a practical art expressed on the basis of ordinary people’s life and practicality.
Today, there are increasing cases of reinterpreting and creatively utilizing Korean nation’s folk paintings in various design fields. Among them, folk painting Munjado (Character Painting) resembles the sensitivity of contemporary design most among the folk paintings with excellent harmony of texts and pictures regarding our ancestors’ aspirations and symbolic charm along with the goal of reforming Korean nation’s sense of ethics to the public.
Accordingly, the works using traditional folk painting Munjado in the design field have been researched and produced. Yet, not so much apart from the form of Munjado of Joseon Dynasty, the contemporary utilization of Munjado developed till now has a limitation that it recognizes the writings and pictures of Munjado as traditional patterns. In addition, the preceding papers viewed and studied Munjado mainly limited to typography or calligraphy, so the domain of Munjado is expressed in a very reduced form, which is another limitation.
Thus, this paper attempts to study the direction of developing contemporary Munjado as a design field full of distinctive features utilizing traditional folk painting Munjado’s unique features without being limited to typography or calligraphy.
In addition, there are lacking development and research on Munjado with the material of Hangul (Korean alphabet) because of the recognition of a unique visual language only shown in the Chinese character cultural area. So, assuming that the utilization of more various designs using Hangul should be sought for in order to increase the contemporary design utilization of Hangul, this study researched the works with the material of Hangul.
This paper sought for a contemporary development plan using folk painting, Munjado and divided and analyzed contemporary artists’ works into the cases of visual representations and craft expressions, which reinterpret existing production techniques as concise and simplified design for contemporary sensitivity apart from the representation techniques of realistic Korean paintings.
In addition, analyzing and studying the products using Munjado and Hangul among those with craft expressions being sold in the market, it is desired that in the future, a variety of research and development of Korea’s excellent traditional culture, folk paintings will continue with the materials of contemporary design. Also, the ultimate goals of this study are the diversification of Hangul letter design; the evolutionary succession of traditional culture; and the development of the most Korean style culture to a worldwide culture.
