This study explores the ways in which form, rules, and constraints are transformed through a series of printmaking-based practices, and how these transformations return to shape both the internal structure of the works and the modes of their perception. Printmaking traditionally operates through rule-based systems grounded in multiplicity, procedurality, and the rigor of production processes. At the same time, it inherently contains conditions of contingency and processual variation, which become crucial drivers for the expansion of artistic practice. When a single plate produces multiple outcomes, or when variations occur in the plate’s form, designation, and methods of printing, the resulting differences allow form to function not merely as an external shell but as the content of the work itself, generating a structure in which rules and deviations intersect.
Rather than constructing a predetermined structure from the outset, this research begins with observing a cumulative process of experimentation, in which formal elements repeatedly infiltrate the interior of the work and subsequently return as clues for interpretation and perception. As the practice develops through repetition, the produced works do not reinforce sameness but instead tend to generate new layers and dimensions. Such outcomes cannot be sufficiently explained within a simple circular model. To articulate this accumulated trajectory of practice, the concept of “spiral recursion” is introduced. This is not a structure established as a fixed goal in advance, but a structural tendency conceptually identified retrospectively through the process of modifying rules.
In conclusion, this study reinterprets printmaking not merely as a technical medium, but as an open system in which rules and deviations continuously redefine one another and generate new layers of meaning. Spiral recursion reveals the internal structure of a practice that produces difference through repetition and proposes a way in which printmaking can be expanded as a contemporary formative practice.
