This study aims to identify a group of frequently used expressions in Korean discourse―namely ‘말해, 말해서, 말하자면, 말하면’―as metadiscourse markers and to analyze their patterns of realization and discourse functions. To this end, data were drawn from the National Institute of Korean Language Spoken Corpus (2020). After retrieving and selecting ‘말하다’-based metadiscourse markers from the corpus, their collocational patterns and discourse functions were analyzed within the metadiscourse framework proposed by Hyland (2005).
The results show that ‘말하면’ occurred with the highest frequency among the four types, exhibiting a wide range of collocational possibilities and diverse uses as a discourse marker. The functional analysis of the extracted metadiscourse markers revealed that they perform various discourse functions, including elaboration, expression of speaker stance, logical connection, guidance of text structure, mitigation and hedging, and emphasis. These findings confirm that although ‘말하다’-based metadiscourse markers share the same verbal stem ‘말하-’, they are realized as distinct metadiscourse markers with diverse discourse functions depending on the type of connective ending (e.g. ‘-아’, ‘-아서’, ‘-면’, ‘-자면’) and the collocating preceding expressions.
