Jeanette Winterson rewrote Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale into a modern queer novel, The Gap of Time. Winterson’s cover-version is considered a notch below compared to her other fictions. This study seeks to understand why its being less than expected from her too intimate identification with the original, and the innate impossibility of the project itself, a cover-version of being the same and the new at the same time. Winterson shares Shakespeare’s thematic concerns in The Winter’s Tale so intimately that The Gap of Time emerges entirely derivative next to the original. Her interest in passion and time comes from her existential perception of life and literature she experienced as an adopted child and as a queer writer. It is with the intimacy failure that Winterson filled Shakespeare’s void of whose negative presence supplies not only ambiguities but also space or gap of creativity.
