A Portrait of Intellectuals Seen through The Irony of Self-revelation of The Narrater in Bartleby, the Scrivener
This paper is focused on the reliability of the narrater in Bartleby, the Scrivener, written by Herman Melville. The reliability of the narrater in this work is critical, because the theme of this work depends on it.
The narrater reveals himself in the course of confronting Bartleby who, one of his employees, refuses working without any causes. Despite of his efforts to persuade Bartleby he fails. In this course he poses he did his best with his Christianity and humanism. But the narrater is proved unreliable, because his sayings on Christianity and humanism are different from his behavior in reality. Through this irony of self-revelation this work shows an aspect of intellectuals.
