The purpose of this paper is to study W. Somerset Maugham's view point of love through the examination of Maugham's works. The following is Maugham's view of love : Love has two meanings : love pure and simple, sexual love, namely ; and loving-kindness. Sexual love is the loves between a pair of lovers and newly married couple. Because the love(hereinafter the love means sexual love) depends on sexual desire. it dwindles into affection after five years of marriage.
Affection is created by habit, community of interests, convenience, and the desire of companionship. Love dies because of two laws : the law of change and the law of discord.
Loving-kindness is not coloured with that transitoriness which is the irremediable defect of love. It is like dancing ; it is pleasant exercise only if to go bed with one's partner would not be disgusting.
In loving-kindness the sexual instinct is sublimated. it is friendship between man and woman, and platonic love.
Unless love is passion, it's not love. Accordingly love is passion. Passion thrives not on satisfaction, but on impediment. It destroyed Antony and Cleopatra, Tristan and Isolde, Parnell and Kitty O'Shea.
Desire isn't love and passion. Desire is the natural consequence of the sexual instinct. It is irresistible ; the mind can not battle with it. Desire is sad.
Love is the dirty trick nature plays on us to achieve the continuation of the species. Consequently it is very stupid for us to have as many babies as nature wishes.
