This thesis is about the character expression of Kim Hong Do and Gustave Moro. At the late of Lee Dynasty, in pictures new mode styles, Korean and nationalistic were prevailng but imitation of Chinese painting had decreased more, which was popular among paintists of Chosun at the begining of Lee Dynasty. They enjoy drawing nature filled with Korean flavor and daily life of markets or streets. There were theree famous persons in Chosun. That is, Ann-Kyun was an early man of Chosun, at the late of it were Chang Seung-up and Kim Hong-Do. But compared with them, they had a different, style in painting. Especially, what was distinguished, he was good at decribing a figure in a landscape, a genre painting and a smith. Among of them a genre painting made him very famous. He usually painted our figure and face and classical beauty of form like this was against breaking feudal society so it didn`t progress modern realism on account of the southem school of Chinese painting, which was widely like with Kim Jung-Hee`s school. A genre painting variety or beauty therefore it was sternly connected modern life or culture. In a modern genre painting, there are so many materials around our circumstances, subway, busy passers-by etc. Male figures in Moreau`s works are beautiful boys and young men except a few cases. Moreau`s potenial homosexuality is suggested by his celebration of male figures with faces and bodies undistinguishable from women and the repetition of themes implying homosexuality. The male homosexuality was publicly regarded as a misconduct and crime in the 19th century, but some writers and artists sul imated male homosexuality into mystical love which could become innocently and perfectly the spiritual thing and thus found the adequate symbol in the androgyne image. While the idealized image of male androgyne was applauded by decadent writers and Moreau, female androgyne was dread for them. The vicious women with aggressiveness and brutality characteristic of men control weak and beautiful men. The background of the widespread use of this type of woman`s image in the 19the century is the men`s masochistic attitude to abandon their manliness, to show their weakness and to be dominated by women. Especially Moreau sticked to this theme for his lifetime, remaining single and living with his mother, and accused of women`s uselessness and harm. The fact that Moreau adhered to the fatal women`s image, castrating men, and led an abstinent life proves that he was afraid of women an sexual union, the reason of which is due to the influence of his mother. Moreau, thought he had a fear of sensual pleasure, could not abandon the fantasy about it. Secret eroticism prevalent in all his works exposes his repressed desire. Just as Moreau`s carnal abstinence and sensuous vision, the figures in us paintings are physically innocent but spiritually licentious, which is characteristic of the most decadent life. Moreau could satisfy the desire unfulfilled in the reality only through art. He sublimated his repressed desire into art.
