This article discusses the representation of neurasthenia in Pak T'aewon's 1930s fiction as a figure for the relationship between the individual and the contradictions and stresses of modernity. Neurasthenia provided a model of disease that, with its relatively large array of potential causes and symptoms, was easily appropriated in differenttimes and places. I locate the origins of this disease of "amorphous possibility" in the writings of George Beard before treating the disease as it appeared in East Asia, particularly as characterized in a series of articles published in the Tonga ilbo. I read the movement of neurasthenia from an external (social) to a psychical etiology in these articles as reflected in the movement of two of Pak's neurasthenics, from the colonial capital of kyongsong to the imperial metropole of Tokyo. I suggest that this subtle shift in the representation of neurasthenic symptoms reveals ambiguities in the disease-which functions as both a threatening sign of individual degeneracy and at the same time a mark of successful modernization-and propose that future researchmay find a fruitful link between this ambiguity and the fundamental contradictions of colonial modernity itself.
