Most of the flower consumption in Korea today is domestic. The consumption rate has shown almost 10% annual increase. Although 2.6 million dollars worth of flowers have been shown for a year through exporting from Korea to foreign countries, yearly Korean import of flowers has run up to approximately four times more than that of the export in the year of 1989.
With probable ambition of successful floricultural export and gradual development of the Korean exporting in the future, revealing and assessment of the present status of few out standing flower exporting countries were regarded worthwhile to elucidate.
1.Due to the fact that Holland has her most suited environment for the culture and production of bulbous ornamentals today, the country has dealt with the flowers as much as 70% of the world export. Holland is of a country with a high labor cost, and has developed high level of technology in the practice of flower production and the flower business through foriegn production area (Kenya, Zimbabwe, etc.) .
2.A huge comsumption area of requiring four-hour flying distance to USA, Colombia is the second outstanding country of flower export now these days. The exporting flowers are cutflowers of carnation, chrysanthemum and rose, etc. produced throughout the year. Roughly 70% of the total cutflowers imported to USA comes from Colombia now, obviously because of having the lower production costs owing to the climatic appropriation and low wages (j.e.. $ 120 to 150 for a person per month work at farms).
3.Since Israel is also provided with naturally moderate climate for the exporting flower growing and comparatively moderate wages, low priced and good quality cutflowers can be produced during the cold season of EC countries, such as carnations, chrysanthemums, statice and gypsophilas. These have been consistently exported to EC, although no notable Israel imports have been known.
4.Holland is engaged actively in starting the cutflower dealing with Kenya and Zimbabwe of Africa to be sent to EC. These African countries are with very desirable climate and ciltural conditions for the cutflowers as in the case of Colombia in South America perhaps more so. Labor wage is about 30 dollars a month per person.
5.Noteworthy quantity of orchid "denphalae" from Thailand has been experting to Japan. orchide are the items of high price and very esthetic, having good keeping quality, and yet popular among Japanese people. In this regard, cattleya orchids exported from Singapore and cymbidium orchids from New Zealand into the outstanding Japanese flower marets have some-how singnificant mean to us to develop and think about future exporting item from Korea to them, if economically appropriate area are chosen for the production and ratinal managing systems are established.
