미국의 정체성 붕괴와 회복의 가능성: 샘 셰퍼드의 『충격의 상태』 읽기 = The Collapse of American Identity and its Potential Recovery: A Reading of Sam Shepard`s States of Shock

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Sam Shepard’s States of Shock, staged after a six-year gap received many severe criticisms. The negative responses to the work result from the fact that the theme and dramaturgy of this play were totally different from those of the family plays of his prime. Most critics evaluated this play as degenerating from the unique realism in his family plays. In terms of the theme, critics only concentrated on the father-son relationship or antiwar feature. However, Shepard strategically uses various theatrical techniques such as allegory, vaudeville repertoire, and the techniques of Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht to highlight theme. Through analyzing the text carefully in regards to the above-mentioned theatrical techniques, this article aims to demonstrate that the relationship between Colonel and Stubbs was a metaphor for the collapse of the American identity. Further, it will highlight how Shepard presents the potential recovery of the American identity through reversing the power-relation of the two characters.(Chonbuk National University)
