禪修行의 대중화에 대한 一考 - 龍城선사를 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본래면목을 自內證한 용성선사는 화두를 참구하는 법도 자세히 모르면 서 공부인을 지도하는 데에 대한 우려와 동시에 바른 공부법에 대한 한 글화의 시급함을 절감하였다. 그리고 禪의 대중화를 불교개혁의 기본으 로 보았던 선사는 도심지인 서울에 禪宗敎堂을 설립하여 많은 사람들에 게 참선을 實修케 하였다. 또한 여러 선지식과 뜻을 모아 선학원을 건립 하였고 재가자에게도 선수행을 포교의 지침으로 삼아 교화를 선양하였는 데, 비로소 근세 한국불교 최초로 재가자들이 도심생활 속에서도 참선지 도를 받을 수 있게 되었던 것이다. 이와 같이 용성선사는 선수행의 대중화를 위해 먼저 경전과 선서를 한 글화하고 선수행 결사를 단행하여 출가 수행자를 중심으로 행해지던 선 수행법을 일반 대중에게 널리 전하였으며, 이를 계승한 제자들이 제방에 서 스승의 유지를 받들어 선의 대중화에 주력하게 되었다. 나아가 선사의 헌신적인 노력이 오늘날까지 면면히 이어져 간화선을 표방하는 조계종에서도 일반인을 대상으로 하는 간화선 입문프로그램을 비롯하여 대학생․청소년․어린이 禪프로그램지침서를 발간하여 실시하 는 등 禪의 대중화를 위해 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 더욱이 근래에 이르러 서양의 눈 푸른 불자들이 조계종으로 출가하여 선수행을 하고 있는 점으 로 보아서 세계적으로 확산되어 가고 있는 선의 대중화를 한층 더 실감 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Master Yongseong, who had enlightenment of Buddha nature, worried that one who could not exactly understand how to pursue Gongan, tried to teach practitioners, He also realized the urgent need of making the right method of practice translate into Korean. He considered the Popularization of Seon as a basis for Buddhist reform so that he constructed the Seon practice center in Seoul, where many people could practice meditation. Also, he founded Seonhakwon with other Seon masters, teaching Buddhism by the principle of Seon practice, which means for the first time in modern Korean Buddhism, lay people were able to learn Seon practice in the middle of the city. For the Popularization of Seon practice, Master Yongseong first translated sutras and books of Seon into Korean, conducted Seon practice . As a result, the practice methods which were focused only on monks before, could be spread widely, and his disciples succeeded his principle, making efforts for the Popularization of Seon practice. Furthermore, Mater's dedicated efforts have been succeeded today,. The Jogye order of Korean Buddhism declaring Observing Gongan Seon, has made sincere efforts for the popularization of Seon practice, creating beginners' programs and publishing text books for lay people, university students, adolescents, and children. In Particular, lately a number of western monks have become the members of the Jogye order of Korean Buddhism, and practice seon meditation. Therefore, it is certain that the popularization of Seon practice is worldly spread.
