청년층의 병역이행 형태별 노동시장 성과 분석: 첫 일자리 취업연령 및 임금을 중심으로 = Labor Market Impacts of Service on Young Veterans by Branch of Military Service: Age, Employment and Wages

Using Korean Education & Employment Panel (KEEP) data, this paper examines whether military service in given branches of the military has any effects on veterans in the labor market. Based on the Propensity Score Matching method, the average age of skilled industrial personnel when they started their first job is one year and 8 months younger than the equivalent age of the subset of such personnel whom had served in the Army. The corresponding age differences among personnel with backgrounds in other service branches were not significant. No statistically significant impact on wages was found for service in any branch of the military.
These results indicate that there are no differences between the labor market impacts on veterans of service in any of the military’s service branches, save for service in the Army’s distinct impact on those who go on to be employed as skilled industrial personnel. This paper suggests that veterans need government employment assistance regardless of the service branch they served in.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 한국교육고용패널 데이터를 이용하여 병역이행 형태별 첫 일자리 취업연령과 임금에 미치는 영향을 성향점수매칭 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 첫 일자리 취업연령을 종속변수로 하여 분석한 결과 육군병은 산업기능요원보다 약 1년 8개월 정도 취업이 늦는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 나머지 병역이행 형태와는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 발견하지 못했으며 첫 직장 임금을 종속변수로 하여 분석한 경우에도 육군병과 다른 병역이행 형태 사이에서 유의한 차이를 발견하지 못했다.
이러한 결과는 병역이행이 초기 노동시장에 미치는 영향은 병역이행 형태별로 유의한 차이가 없다는 것을 의미하며, 다만 산업기능요원의 경우 가교환경가설에 따라 다른 병역이행 형태에 비해 초기 노동시장 진입이 빠를 수 있음을 의미한다.
