In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 married men and women who had either had an extramarital affair themselves or had dealt with a spouse's affair. The researcher found that participants moved through a three-stage process of forgiveness following disclosure: impact, moratorium, and moving on. The article addresses the relevance of the results for therapists and the implications for future research.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 결혼생활에서 배우자이든 자신이든 혼외관계의 발생과 노출을 경험한 남녀 12명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 면접대상들은 혼외관계의 노출에 뒤따르는 3단계의 과정을 보여주었다. 그 과정은 감정적으로 요동을 경험하는 “충격”단계로 시작하여, 정서적으로 덜 반응하면서 부정의 의미를 새겨보는 “유예”단계를 거쳐, 최종적으로 “이동”단계로 나아가게 된다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 치료적 관점에서 혼외관계를 경험한 부부관계에서의 용서나 변화의 과정을 논의하고 후속 연구와 임상 실제를 위한 시사점을 제시한다.
