중세 동서양 필사문화 비교연구를 위한 방법론적 접근 ― 디지털 자료를 중심으로 = Methodological Approaches to the Comparative Study of Medieval Eastern and Western Scribal Cultures: Focusing on Digital Materials

The research on the comparison of Eastern and Western scribal cultures will focus on the digital resources of Dunhuang manuscripts of Tang dynasty and medieval European manuscripts. The Dunhuang manuscripts have been digitized for the past 30 years, and European manuscripts have been digitized by major libraries and museums in Europe, such as the British Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, since the mid-to-late 2000s. Most of these digital resources are available in high-definition, so they can be fully utilized for research. In particular, they can be used to solve situations where preservation issues prevent the public from viewing the original materials, or where cost, distance, or time constraints make it difficult to view the original. In addition, the manipulative nature of digital materials - zooming in, zooming out, editing, and more - allows us to see more detail than the naked eye can.
This paper aims to present a methodology for comparing medieval Eastern and Western scribal cultures. The Eastern and Western medieval periods are separated by hundreds of years, but they are united by the fact that they were periods of transition. Whenever human cultures have become more diverse, it has been a time of change, and the signs of this change have been linked to changes in media. In the heyday of scribal writing, which preceded the age of printing, the diversity of knowledge, culture, and people’s interests and concerns in both the East and the West were actively reflected in the relatively easy-to-produce manuscripts. Therefore, a close look at the manuscripts of the time can shed new light on the humanistic spirit and values common to both the medieval East and West.
