피스워크(Piece Work)를 활용한 패션디자인 연구 = A Study of Fashion Design using Piece Work

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인간은 조형적 형태를 표현하기 위하여 자연에 대한 적응과 실생활의 편의를 위하여 도구를 개발하고 조형적 미를 위한 예술적 표현을 목적으로 다양한 기법을 연구하고 활용해 왔으며, 의상에 있어서도 도구와 다양한 기법의 활용은, 의상을 단순히 기능적 목적이 아니라 조형미를 표현하기 위한 방법으로 발전하게 되었다.
피스워크(Piecework) 기법은 인간이 자연으로부터 얻어진 규칙과 지식에 의한 조형 활동을 시작하게 피스워크 기법의 시작은 인간이 보다 크고 넓은 면적의 형태를 구성하기 위한 시도에서부터 시작이 되었으며, 도구의 활용을 통하여 자연에서 얻어진 재료를 해체하고 다듬는 과정을 거치게 되고, 피스의 형태를 결합하기 쉬운 형태로 변형할 수 있게 되면서 보다 쉽게 의도된 형태를 표현할 수 있게 되었다.
또한 의상의 있어서 피스워크 기법은 평면적인 직물위에 입체적인 공간감과 양감, 질감의 디테일의 표현을 위하여 활용되어지며 특히 공예의 예술적 발전과 함께 다양한 형태로 시도되었다.
피스워크의 조형원리와 방법은 처음부터 피스의 전체적인 조합을 예상하고 계산하여 정확히 의도된 순서와 조합에 따라 이어 붙이는 방식이며, 외적 형태 자체에서 새로운 조형성을 찾는 것이 아닌, 의상의 조형성이 가장 처음 시작되는 단위형태인 피스에서부터 조형적 가치를 찾는다는 점에 있어 보다 심도 있는 디자인적 접근이 가능하다. 따라서 피스워크는 조각의 시작부터 수공예가 시작이 되며 정확한 계산에 의한 조합이라고 말할 수 있으며 고난이도의 장인정신이 요구되는 표현기법이다.
패션 디자인은 유행에 민감하게 반응하며, 그 변화의 속도 또한 다른 어떤 디자인 분야보다 급진적으로 진행된다. 특히, 2000년대 중반 유럽에서부터 시작된 패스트 패션(Fast fashion)이라는 새로운 흐름의 출현은 현대 패션시장에 거대 자본력을 바탕으로 한 SPA브랜드(Specialty store retailer of Private label Apparel Brand)를 탄생시켰고, 현대 패션 시장을 빠른 트랜드 반영과, 제조, 유통을 통해 잠식하고 있다.
트랜드를 따르고 시장성만을 중시하는 수많은 브랜드들이 우후죽순 생겨나고 소멸하기를 반복하며 패스트 패션이 현대패션을 이끄는 현재, 디자이너로써 보다 거시적인 관점으로 패션에 대한 접근의 필요성이 대두되었으며, 패션 디자이너에게 독창적인 디자인 아이덴티티 구축의 필요성이 강조되고, 디자인 아이덴티티 구축의 필요성이 중요시 되고 있다. 그리고 이를 해결하기 위하여 하이퀄리티 브랜드들이 가진 단순히 모방할 수 없는 수공예적 표현방식은 디자인 아이덴티티를 구축하고자 하는 수많은 디자이너들로 하여금 끊임없는 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 현대패션에서 수공예적 특성은 하이퀄리티 브랜드를 결정짓는 중요한 척도가 되었으며, 장인정신을 기반으로 한 수공예는 하이퀄리티 패션 브랜드로 성장하기 위한 가장 기본적인 조건과 동시에 배경이라고 말할 수 있다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 피스워크라는 수공예 표현기법의 정확한 개념과 특성을 고찰하여 이론적 토대를 정립하고, 이를 바탕으로 현대 패션에서 피스워크 기법이 어떻게 적용되어 왔는지 분석하고 피스워크가 어떠한 조형적 특성을 가졌으며 어떠한 방식으로 전개될 수 있는지 연구자의 8벌의 의상 작품을 통해 구체적인 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Humans have developed tools with a view to expression of formative shapes, adaptation to nature and daily convenience and they have studied and used various techniques with a view to artistic expression for formative beauty. Also in clothes, use of tools and diverse techniques developed the purpose of clothes: from a tool for protecting body to a tool for expressing formative beauty.
A technique called piecework has allowed humans to carry out formative activities with addition of natural rules. The technique was originated from humans’ attempt to construct shapes on bigger and wider areas. Their use of tools permitted humans to analyze natural resources and to trim them. Transformation of piece-form into easier form has lead to easy expression of intended shapes.
In addition, piecework in terms of clothes is used to express three dimensional sense of space and details of sense of volume and texture on flat textures. In particular, diverse forms of piecework were tried as crafts developed.
Piecework method is to predict and consider general combination of pieces and connect them according to accurately intended order and combination. Its formative principles include finding of formative from a piece, a unit form where formativeness of clothes begins instead of finding of a new formativeness from the appearance. Design wise, this allows for a profound approach. Therefore, even a piece of piecework can refer to start of craft. Piecework is a result of an accurate combination and an expressional technique which requires high level of craftsmanship.
Fashion design is very sensitive to trend and changes way faster than any other design areas. In middle 2000, in particular, appearance of a new trend, fast fashion, starting from Europe created SPA brand (specialty store retailer of private label apparel brand) based on huge capital of modern fashion market. It also has been conquering the fashion market by means of fast application of trends, manufacture and distribution.
Living in a modern fashion world where hundreds of brands which follow trends and value only marketability come today and go tomorrow under fast fashion rule, designers are required to develop a broad understanding of fashion and to build a creative identity. For solution to this problem, uncopiable handcrafted expression that high-quality brands have has continuously attracted attention of designers who want to construct design identity. In modern fashion, high quality brands greatly rely on handcrafted feature and craftsmanship-based handcraft is essential to growth to high quality fashion brand and background as well.
Thus, this research studied an exact concept and features of a handcraft expressional technique, piecework to establish a theoretical basis. Based on the result, this aimed to analyze how piecework is applied to modern fashion, what characterizes the technique in terms of formativeness and how it proceeds by displaying eight pieces of researchers’ clothes.
