새로운 대중매체로서의 팀파늄 조각 연구 = The New Mass Media Aspect of Tympanum Sculpture : Focus on Tbe Last Judgement in Autun Cathedral

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 12세기 프랑스의 순례양식 교회에서 서양미술시장 처음으로 등장한 팀파늄 조각의 뉴 미디어적 측면과 그것이 최후의 심판도상과 결합되었을 때 기독교 대중을 향해 발휘하게 되는 대중매체적 성격에 관한 연구이다. 당시 서구 기독교 사회에서 열풍처럼 불어 닥친 순례현상의 결과로 등장한 순례양식 교회는 스페인의 산티아고 데 콤포스텔라로 기는 순례자들을 효과적으로 수용하기 위하여 새로운 구조를 띠고 탄생하였다. 순례양식의 구조 가운데 대중매체적 관점에서 흥미로운 부분은 서측 파사드의 중앙출입문 상단의 반원형 공간인 팀파늄인데, 이곳에는 최후의 심판 도상이 부조로 조각되었다. 이는 무엇보다도 '돌에 세겨진 성경'으로서 기능을 가졌다.
특히 이미지의 종교ㆍ교육적 역할을 담당하는 뉴 미디어로서 팀파늄 조각이 그 극적인 효과를 발휘한 예는 부르고뉴의 대표적인 순례성당인 오텡 대성당이었다. 오텡 대성당의 서측 중앙 출입문 상단에 있는 팀파늄 조각의 주제는 최후의 심판 도상으로, 요한계시록과 마태복음에 그 출처를 두고 있다. 그러나 여기에 성경에는 나타나지 않는, 제3의 출처로서 『황금전설』에서 영향을 받은 민중적 도상인 사이코스타시스 모티브가 등장하고 있다. 저울에 영혼의 무게를 달고 있는 미카엘 대천사의 모습을 다룬 이 도상은 당시 문맹자들이 대부분이었던 기독교 사회에서 대중과 순례자들에게 교회의 가르침을 전달하는 대중매체적 역할을 담당했을 것이라는 것이 이 논문의 요지이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is intended to analyze the new media aspect of Tympanum sculpture which appeared for the first time in the history of western an in the French pilgrimage church of the 12th century, and the characteristics of mass media for the masses of Christians when it was combined with the icon of the Last Judgement. As the result of pilgrimage phenomena followed like a strong wind in a western Christian society, the pilgrimage church came into the world with a new structure in order to effectively accommodate pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostella in Spain. In the structure of pilgrimage style, an interesting part from the aspect of mass media is Tympanum, a semicircular space on the top of the central portal of the western facade. In here, the image of the Last Judgement was carved in relief. It functioned as 'the Bible calved on the stone' in the Christian society that was full of the illiterates at that time.
Especially, Autun Cathedral, the representative pilgrimage church in Bourgogne showed dramatic effect of Tympanum sculpture as the new media which plays the religious and educational role of the image. the theme of Tympanum sculpture on the top of the western central portal of Autun Cathedral is the Last Judgement which is quoted from the Book of Revelations and Matthew. However, as the third source which is not shown in the Bible, the Psychostasis motif which is a popular icon influenced by Golden Legend appears. This icon is the figure of saint Michael the archangel who weighs a soul on the scales, and it played the role of mass media to convey the teachings of the church to people and pilgrims in the Christian society which was mostly full of the illiterates. It is the main point of this dissertation.
