The Seowon was built on the basis of Neo-Confucianism, which is the universal value ideology of Joseon society. It was one of the units of society that reproduced its values and expanded the order to which they were directed.
The Seowon was an educational institution that taught and learned about Neo-Confucianism. At the same time, it was a mechanism to honor those who had sought and practiced its values earlier.
The ritual of sacrifice of performed by the Seowon has the same character as the school ritual as the Hyanggyo Seokjeon, which is a public ritual of the state. It paved the way for the ritual to spread throughout society. The ritual of Seowon was a ritual as the embodiment of the Confucian value system.
The Seowon ritual of sacrifice was followed by adjusting some of the rituals according to the Seowon based on the social publicity of the Seowon. The Seowon made efforts to maintain and pass on the original form by creating and preserving records of the Seowon-making rituals.
The Sewon ritual of sacrifice has been passed down from one generation to the next through cultural embodiment, and it is not just the transmission of rituals, but the transmission of richer knowledge and skills.
