Ethnic Identity and Cultural Code-Switching of Ukrainian Canadians

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우크라이나인들은 이미 100여 년 전 캐나다로 이민을 시작하여 지금 현재 전체 캐나다인구 중 8번째로 큰 민족구성을 보이고 있다. 그러나 다민족 국가의 성격을 지닌 캐나다에서 우크라이나인들은 타민족과의 혼인을 통해 순수한 혈통을 유지하기 어려운 상태이다. 실제로 우크라이나인구 중 겨우 30-35%정도만이 순수 우크라이나 혈통을 유지하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 상황에서 몇몇 학자들은 캐나다에서 소수민족성은 이미 중요성을 잃고 있으며, 캐나다 국가가 만들어내는 포괄적인 광의의 문화에 흡수, 동화되어 가고 있다고 보고 있다.
이 논문은 바로 이와 같은 기존의 사회학적 시각에 문제를 제기하고 있다. 다시 말해 같은 민족구성원간의 혼례 비율이 저하되고, 타 민족과의 혼례비율이 증가하는 것이 바로 한 소수민족의 문화의 종말과 캐나다 문화로의 일방적 흡수, 통합을 의미하는 것이 아니라는 것을 증명하고 있다. 이 논문에서 저자는 개인적인 상황, 경제, 종교, 정치적 입장, 특수한 환경과 조건 등에 따라 자신의 민족정체성을 강하게 표현하거나 표현하지 않는 경우가 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 과정을 통해 저자는 캐나다내 우크라이나 이민자들과 그들의 후손들은 자신들의 정체성을 완전히 잃지 않고 있으며, 나름대로 타민족 문화와의 타협 혹은 모방을 통해 자신의 정체성을 유지, 발전시켜가고 있으며, 상황에 따라 자신이 필요한 문화적 코드를 선택하며 정체성을 표현해 가고 있다고 설명하고 있다.
