Southwestern part of Karelia Republic is in contiguity with the coast of Lake Lodoga and is located in the junction point between Archean shield and Paleoproterozoic fold belt. This area which is located within the southeastern extension belt of Raahe-Ladoga Zone representing active continental margin consists of large amounts of Paleoproterozoic rocks. The basement rock in northern portion of this area is granitic gneiss and consists of typical volcanic-plutonic rock with the characteristics of Archean granite-greenstone. At present, many ore deposits and occurrences in small scale are known in the southwestern part of Karelia Republic. Velimaki Fe- Ti deposit hosted in metapyroxenite was mined since the end of 19th century. Lead and zinc was mined as small scale mining in Murusula, Helula, Lesser Sarka, Jalonvaara. Pitkanta deposit hosting copper, iron and tin was mined since the latter part of 19th century. In Russia, the first tin was produced from Pitkanta.
