구비설화를 통해 본 “마고”의 원형 = A Study on the Archetype of “Mago(麻姑)” by way of Oral Legends

This thesis is written about legendary stories related to ``Mago`` by the viewpoint of Korean Sundo. Among oral legends, ``Mago Halmi`` appears, as I have studied on the Korean national transmission situation, Mago Halmi is a ``Grandmother Creator`` and the actions of her ‘building mountain fortress walls’ is the principal characteristics. In a historical book of Korean Sundo 『BuDoJi』, the story of ‘Mago’ who has lived in ‘the Great City of Mago’ appears by way of a myth. It is presented that ‘Mago’ is the Creator of all being of the Universe including mankind, and ``the Great City of Mago`` is presented as an idealistic space where absolutely pure people(CheonIn) had led harmonious lives as God-Human- Combined-In-One. The connection between Mago legend and Mago myth, by the viewpoint of Korean Sundo, I have understood that ``Mago`` had been changed into ``Mago Halmi(Grandma)``, in other words, ``Grandmother Creator`` who has fragmentary traces of the creation of the Universe. And the idealistic space of God-Human-Combined-In-One, ‘the Great City of Mago’ has changed into actions of ‘Building mountain fortress walls’, so has been transmitted. Therefore the archetype of Mago legend is the ‘Mago myth’ of 『BuDoJi』. That is to say, the space of God-Human-Combined-In-One where CheonIns(ShinIns) who were created by Mago had led idealistic lives was ``the Great City of Mago``, but after they had left the Great City of Mago as a result of the ``Disaster of Five Tastes``, because they always wanted to return(BokBon) to their ideal land, they have trained. One of the actions of BokBon, I have seen Mago Halmi has ``built mountain fortress walls`` which symbolized the Great City of Mago. The true meaning of BokBon is recovering the True Nature they have lost and arrive at the state of God-Human-Combined-In-One. Thus the training of Korean Sundo can be regarded as for accomplishing BokBon.
