The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze five kinds of 8th grade middle school science textbooks compiled by the 2015 revised curriculum. This study compares and analyzes science textbooks for second grade middle school students that were first applied to school sites in 2019 to provide information on revised textbooks. This study compared and analyzed the textbook composition system and contents, the quantitative distribution of contents by unit, the contents of textbook inquiry activities, the contents of textbook addendums, and the quantitative comparison and analysis of textbooks. The results of this study are as follows.
First, When five types of textbooks for 8th grade middle school are divided according to introduction, development and arrangement, the publishers have different organizational names but have similar organizational systems. The content of the curriculum is the movement and energy, matter, life, earth and the universe, safety as presented in the 2015 revised science curriculum.
Second, The quantitative distribution of textbook units is allocated at similar rates in the four scientific domains. Textbooks are organized so that students can learn equally without bias in certain areas of science.
Third, The five textbooks have a low proportion of inquiry activities related to the earth and space unit. In five textbooks, High proportion of inquiry activities are Measurement, Communication, Data Analysis, and Investigation.
Forth, The contents of Addendums for Textbooks are Different. Most textbook addendums are focused on solution of textbook question and life-related material.
Fifth, The result of Analyze senstences, picture and diagram by Romey's method is very authoritarian tendency. While question index and activity index are exploratoryism or very exploratoryism.
A variety of inquiry activities should be organized to create textbooks that students can explore and learn for themselves. Increase the utilization of the addendum and Make the sentences, pictures and diagrams of Textbook exploratively.
