동아시아 사회 사상과 새로운 사회관의 모색 = East Asian Social Thoughts and the Exploration of a New View of Society

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회관은 사회학적 현실 인식에 있어서 중요한 기초가 된다. 이 글은 동아시아 사상의 저류에 흐르고 있는 통일체적 세계관을 바탕으로 사회학의 새로운 사회관을 모색하고자 한다. 현대 사회학의 사회관은 개체 중심적 사회관과 전체 중심적 사회관으로 나눌 수 있다.
개체 중심적 사회관에서는 사회를 개인들의 단순한 집합체로 간주하며, 전체 중심적 사회관에서는 사회를 개인에 외재하면서 개인에게 영향을 끼치는 독자적 실재로 생각한다. 이 두 가지 사회관은 개체와 전체에 대한 강조점은 다르지만, 개인과 사회를 근원적으로 분리된 범주로 간주한다는 점에서는 동일한 전제 위에 서 있다. 이에 반해서, 동아시아의 통일체적 세계관은 전제 자체를 달리한다. 즉 부분과 전체는 근본적으로 분리된 범주가 아니라 일즉다一卽多,, 다즉일多卽一의 통일체라는 전제 위에서 세계를 이해하고자 한다. 통일체적 세계관의 관점에서 보면, 개체는 자신의 독자성과 자율성을 갖고 있으면서 동시에 전체를 내포하고 있다. 그래서 개체의 개성화 과정은 궁극적으로 전체와의 통일성에 대한 자각과 전체의 발전에 기여하게 되는 구조를 갖게 전다. 통일체적 사회관은 사회학의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 여러 가지 함의를 갖고 있다. 이 글에서는 통일체적 사회관에 바탕해서 사회 명목론과 사회 실재론의 대립을 해소시킬 수 있는 가능성을 논의하고 합리성·자유·불평등과 같은 중요한 개념을 새롭게 규정하며, 사회 문제론과 사회 발전론에 기여할 수 있는 가능성 등을 탐색해 본다.

How to view a society is an important basis for understanding the sociological reality. The purpose of this paper is to explore a new view of society on the basis of the unified world view on which the East-Asian thought is founded. The view of society in modern sociology can be divided into an individual-oriented one and a whole-oriented one. In the. former a society is regarded as a simple aggregate of individuals, while in the latter a society is thought to be an independent being existing in the outside of individuals and affecting the individuals. These two views of society are different in that one emphasizes the individual and the other the whole but they stand on the same premise in that both views think that the individual and society are basically separate categories. On the other hand, the unified world view in East-Asia has a different premise: that is, this view tries to understand the world on the premise that the part and whole are not different and they are a unified body. From the unified world view, an individual being has her/his own individuality and autonomy, containing the whole simultaneously. As such, the process of individuality of a person has a structure which ultimately attributes the realization of how to be unified with the whole and the development of the whole. The unified view of society has several meanings which can help the development of sociology. This paper searches the possibility of solving the confrontation between the theories of social nominalism and social realism on the basis of the new view of society. It also tries to find out the possibility of new definition of some important sociological notions such as liberty, inequality and rationality.
