This thesis is a study of <Kreisleriana Op. 16> by Robert Alexander Schumann(1810-1856).
The main focus of this thesis is to study and analyze how Schumann expressed dual characteristics of Kreisler in his character piece Kreisleriana Op. 16.
The dual characteristics are Florestan which is passionate, extrovert and Eusebius which is dreamy, introvert.
Schumann, a leader of romanticism music in 19 Century, under the influence of literary authors of his times. And he took efforts to express literary lyricism in his music.
Schumann thought that music was literary, emotional, autobiographical. So one impression was expressed in each of his musical pieces by a sensual melody, and this aspect was revealed throughout the form of his Character Pieces.
Schumann represented the dual characteristics through formation, harmonic structure, tonality, rhythm, melodic progression, tempo, and dynamic.
The characteristics of Florestan is emphasized in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th pieces and Eusebius in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th pieces.
Although Schumann didn't use the program nor title for his Kreisleriana, Op.16, he expressed a character or an atmosphere through music itself.
He concentrated upon literature, described emotions, characters and atmosphere by using the language of music; the tone and its color.
