This research aims to produce and implement web-based continuing nurse education programs in response to nurses educational needs, and to verify them, thus preparing for the times that the program will be offered via web.
This research designed, produced and implemented emergency nursing and medical fee schedule management subjects based on Jung, In-seongs (1997) web-based instructional system design, and then compared the learning achievements of web-based learning group of 38 people with those of face-to-face learning group of 39 people.
In the case of the face-to-face learning group, it was requested to complete a questionnaire designed to measure its prior knowledge before receiving the continuing education program, while the face-to-face group was made to complete the questionnaire designed to measure the learning achievements right after finishing the continuing education program. With respect to the web-based educational group, it was asked to complete a questionnaire to measure its prior knowledge before offering the web-based continuing education program, and to complete a questionnaire via web designed to measure its learning achievements right after finishing the continuing education program.
With respect to the face-to-face learning group, it was offered the face-to-face continuing education program held at a hospital in Seoul on July 6-7, 2000. As for the web-based learning group, it was given the web-based education from October 9 until November 20, 2000.
The questionnaire have been developed by these researchers to measure pre-learning knowledge on emergency nursing and medical fee schedule management.
Data collected for this research have been given statistical analysis, using SPSS 10.0 for Windows Program.
The following is the results of this research.
The web-based learning group showed its pre-learning knowledge level at 10.79 (SD=5.52) mean points, and the face-to-face learning group did it at 10.43(SD=6.73) mean points. Also, in relation to the learning achievements, the web-based learning group registered 21.89(SD=4.97) mean points, and the face-to-face learning group did 17.48(SD=8.07) mean points.
As a result of giving Mann-Whitney test, with respect to pre-learning prior knowledge level, there was no significant difference between the web-based learning group and the face-to-face learning group (Z=-.092, p=.926), while after completing learning, there was a significant difference in the learning achievements between the web-based learning group and the face-to-face learning group (Z=-2.406, p=.008).
That is, this research revealed this: the experimental group and the control group with both having no significant difference in the pre-learning level, after receiving the continuing education each with different methods (face-to-face education and web-based education), showed that the web-based learning groups attained higher learning achievements than the face-to-face learning groups. This result proves the effect of the web-based education to be no worse or even better than that of the face-to-face education, provided that choices of appropriate themes and quality courses composition, as well as systematic design·development·effective implementation are guaranteed.
The following is proposed based upon the outcome of this research.
First, based upon the outcome of this research, studies should continue to be conducted to verify the effect of web-based nurse continuing education programs.
Second, methods and ways should be worked out to identify nurses actual educational needs in addition to self-report type questionnaires used in this research.
Third, the stage designed to verify the effect of programs developed in the course of this research could not control 100% outside factors, educators, learners, etc., as quasi-experimental research. Hence, studies should be conducted to control part or the whole of these factors.
Fourth, programs developed during this research are limited to `emergency nursing and `medical fee schedule management subjects, and thus web-based continuing education programs with other themes need to be developed, and also their effect need to be analyzed.
Fifth, studies are required in the future to measure actual attitude or technical aspects to effectively verify the effect of programs developed for this research, as they are focused only on measuring cognitive knowledge aspects.
