The purposes of this study were to analyze mathematics curriculum in kindergartens and to investigate the new direction of kindergarten mathematics education. The study included a content analysis of objectives and activities in curriculum guides proposed by the Ministry of Education for kindergarten mathematics curriculum and examination of mathematical activities and materials in kindergartens. It also included a survey of experts` opinions on essential math abilities and goals in kindergarten mathematics education for the twenty-first Century. Five kindergarten classrooms were randomly selected for observation of mathematics learning and 33 professors in the field of early childhood education responded to the questionnaire. The data of the study were analyzed by a qulitative as well as quantitative analysis. The results of this study are as follows: The results of analysis of kindergarten mathematics curriculum show that most of mathematics activities in Curriculum Guides for Teachers dealt with learning for number, classification, and spatial relations among seven major objectives and that most of mathematics activities focused on only 1-2 subobjectives of each major objective and were given great weight to themes for spring semester. Further, the results of analysis of mathematics activities in kindergartens reveal that most of the materials for mathematics activities children selected activities in math area by themselves, but only half of them concentrated on their math activities. Finally, the kindergarten teachers and professors suugested that problem-solving, geometry, pattern, fraction, statistics, and computer as new contents should be included in kindergarten mathematics education.
