This study was undertaken to initiate a routine monitoring of the heavy metal contents of freshwater and sediments.
The samples were collected at 4 polluted areas(S5-S9) located on the Mankyung river during October in 1987. And then the contents of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
The results were summarized as follows :
1. With the possible exception of zinc, the heavy metal concentration of freshwater collected in the downstream were significantly higher than those of upstream.
2. The mean value of heavy metal contents of the polluted area(S5-S9) were greater than those of the nonpolluted area(S1-S4) in sediments.
3. The heavy metal contents of surface sediment(0-5cm depth) were slightly higher than those of surface sediment(5-20cm depth).
4. The highest heavy metal contents in sediment were found close to the area of S5, S6, S9.
5. There was a strong positive correlation between the concentrations of almost all metals. Therefore, changes in the levels of one metal were usually associated with changes in the other heavy metals.
