The chromosomal analysis of Fringilla montifringilla, Carduelis sinica ussuriensis and Carduelis spinus of The family Fringillidae (passeriformes) in Korea was performed by conventional Giemsa staining and C-banding method. The diploid number of F. montifringilla was 2n=74-76, and 2n=78-80 in C. sinica, C. spinus. The conventional karyotypes and distribution of constitutive heterochromatin were very different among three species. The sex chromosomes in C. sinica and C. spinus are well differentiated Z and W sex chromosomes. The W chromosome is entirely constitutively heterochromatic. But Z and W chromosomes in F. montifringilla are morphological undifferentiated chromosome that can be only identified by its heteropycnosis.
