"청동으로 황금을" 또는 헤아릴 수 없음 : 소크라테스, 트라시마코스, 알키비아데스의 드라마 = "Gold with Bronze" or Sufferings from Immeasurability : Dialectic Drama of Socrates, Thrasymachus, Alcibiades

The concept and the discussion of appropriateness (prosēkon) in Plato's Republic is one of core arguments for his theory of justice. The anxious confrontation of Thrasymachus against Socrates also has been encapsulated in the related key-words, such as 'pleonektein' and 'pleonexia'. With careful analysis of these terms we can outset an inquiry for the significance of sincere persuasion of Socrates concerning "caring for oneself(epimeleia heautou)". When he made a hymn to Socrates, Alcibiades has actually exposed himself and what he believes on his unbelievable shame, supposedly coming from Socrates. On Alcibiades' point of view he is not able to understand or measure this kind of emotion and suffering. But our famous proponent of prosēkon, Socrates himself internalizes the desire for exceeding(pleonektein), as far as he is the one who is not beautiful and the one who is eager for the ascent up to the beautiful, and that is the endless work of eros, erotica.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

플라톤 『국가』 정의론의 중심은 '적절한 몫'에 대한 논의이다. 『국가』 1권의 소크라테스와 트라시마코스의 대립을 집약하는 열쇠 말인 '적절함'과 '능가' 개념을 분석하여 자기 자신을 돌보라는 소크라테스의 진지한 설득의 의미를 검토한다. 『향연』 의 알키비아데스는 소크라테스 찬양을 통해 알키비아데스 자신을 드러냈다. 소크라테스와 알키비아데스의 관계에서 그리고 서로에 대한 각자의 이해에서 '적절함'과 '능가'를 관통하는 '헤아릴 수 없음'의 이중적 의미를 검토한다. 알키비아데스로서는 자신이 당한 수치를 헤아릴 길이 없다. 그런데 '적절한' 몫의 대변자로 인정되는 소크라테스에게도 능가의 계기가 작동하는 것은 아닌지 생각해 보았다. 자기성찰을 향한 소크라테스의 부단한 요구는 『향연』에서 사랑하는 일에 대한 끊임없는 추구, 즉 에로티카로 자리 잡는다. 아름답지 않기에 아름다움을 향한 열망을 갖고 계속적인 상승을 감행하는 『향연』속의 소크라테스는 말하자면 그 자신의 텔레마키아를 감행하고 있는 것이다. 그런데 이 논의에 충실히 의거할 때 아름다움을 향해 상승하는 에로티카의 '적절함'은 자신, 즉 현재의 것을 능가하는 것이다. 능가의 계기에 의해, 능가하고자 하는 욕구에 의해 에로티카의 전체 여정이 확장하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그렇다면 소크라테스 역시 '헤아림-헤아릴 수 없음'에 달려있는 문제의 한 축을 내면화한 것이다.
