The purpose of this paper is to present a research and analysis of current situation of Korean dance education in elementary, middle and high schools based on the seventh education curriculum that is currently practiced. Main sources of this study are the 'physical education' textbooks from elementary school to high school.
The result indicates that the contents of Korean dance in the physical education textbooks show consistent understanding about the introduction parts, while in the practical parts, the same repertoires such as Kanggangsullae, T'alch'um, Pungmulch'm, Sogoch'um, and Nongak are repeated in the textbooks from elementary school to high school, putting a limitation on expanding the variety of Korean dance and the cultural insight. In addition, with the confusion of the dance terms and improper explanation of the movements, the textbooks reveal the problems Korean dance got, indicating the urgent need for developing a right Korean dance program. Nowadays in the educational spots in Korea, the dance education attachs weight mainly on aerobic, jazz dance, ballroom dance, and foreign folk dances, and this is caused by the lack of understanding of our culture as well as little development of the right programs for various levels and generations. Therefore in the 21st cultural industry age, the education needs more systematic understanding of Korean dance to present various abilities about Korean culture from the cultural educational perspective. To achieve this purpose, we should not follow the previous repertoires only, but develope various repertoires related to real lives through experiencing the principles and characteristics of our dance, and do the education.
