This study investigates design strategies for improving the educational quality of multimedia content for young children. It emphasizes both design and developmental aspects in its exploration of interactive and educational qualitative multimedia content for young children. This study 1) defines the concept of multimedia content; 2) compares the merits of on-line multimedia content over stand-alone CD-ROM; and 3) examines strategies and tactics used in the designing of multimedia content for young children. The study concludes that several factors need to be considered in designing multimedia content; (1) metaphorical interface, (2) learning styles, (3) variety of activities, (4) the presentation of stories in three ways, i.e., interactive stories, RealAudio stories, Shockwave stories; and (5) personalization. The study also suggests that research for resources in this area should be ongoing particularly the search for multicultural experiences for young children via the world wide web.
