This paper has two aims. The first is to point out the relationship between text types and discourse markers, and the second is to apply these discourse markers to the teaching of academic writing to foreign students studying Korean language at the university level. This study assumes that discourse markers are very important in structuring texts, and that all texts have discourse markers according to their genre. If the markers are not used appropriately in the producing of a text, the text cannot be considered as well written. Writing by foreign students can be improved if they are taught to use discourse markers in academic Korean writing. On the basis of Kang(1999), this study extracted 13 types of texts which foreign students face in their writing and derived 32 types of discourse markers. Representative discourse markers were then classified by text types: demonstrative, conjunctional, modal, and formal functions. As they appear in text types, they also have different meanings according to their types. This point must be taught to help improve the Korean writing ability of foreign students. This paper proposes methods which can be used to teach these discourse markers effectively.
