This study is to survey computer game use and addiction among 5th and 6th grade children and attitudes of parents about their computer game use as perceived by children, and to investigate relationship between addiction in computer game and self-control of children, controlling behavior of parents. For this, four survey questionnaire included parts questions about subjects' computer game play and attitudes of parents about their computer game play, computer game addiction scale(So-Young Lee, 2000), self-control scale(Hyun-Mi Nam, 1999), and parents' autonomy control scale( Jae-Shin Cho, 1995).
First, it was found that most children play computer games almost everyday. The average time for computer game is less than one hour 2nd they generally play the computer game in their house. The kinds of computer game they mainly play are simulation game, quiz game, action/arcade game and sports game, etc.
Second, regarding parents ' attitude about their children's computer game play as perceived by children, it was perceived that most parents worried about their children's computer game play. Although it was perceived that parents restricted time for computer game play but they didn't have special interest in contents of computer game.
Third, proportion of computer game addiction is 25.5%, indicating that the degree of computer game addiction cannot be neglected. There were significant differences according to the gender and the grade. The addiction level of boys was higher than that of girls, and the addiction level of 6th-graders was higher than that of 5th-graders.
Fourth, when the relationship between self-control and the computer game addiction was examined, it was found that the degree of self-control had a negative correlation with the computer game addiction. This result indicated that stronger self-control, perceived by children was related to lower of their level of computer game addiction.
Fifth, the relationship between controlling behavior of parents perceived by children and their computer game addiction was examined, it was found that controlling behavior of parents perceived by children didn't have a significant correlation with the computer game addiction. This result shows that parents' controlling attitude towards children have little influence on their children's game addiction.
The implications of this study are is follows : 1) Considering 25.5% as a proportion of computer game addiction among these elementary students, more active preventive and remedial intervention to treat computer game addiction should be developed and administered in school setting ; 2) Parent education program is also needed in that parents should pay were attention to their children's computer game use through more effective strategies to supervise their children's computer game overuse at home 3) The ability of self-control should be enhanced for children in order to prevent them from computer game addiction.
The limitations and for further studies were discussed.
