Tetragonia tetragonoides has been used in traditional chinese medicine for treatment of a stomach cancer and ulcer. On reviewing the literatures of this plant little phytochemical and pharmacological studies were performed. In continuation of our systemic study for bioactive components from korean compositae medicinal plants, this experiment was carried out. This plant was collected at Jeju island and extracted with MeOH and fractionated using solvents (n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate and BuOH). The repeated column chromatographic separation of the n-hexane extract resulted in the isolation of five phenyl propanoids. Their structures have been established by spectroscopic means to methyl-3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinnamic acid (ferulic acid) (1), trans-3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinnamic acid (trans-ferulic acid) (2), 4' - methoxy cinnamic acid (p-methoxy cinnamic acid) (3), 4'- methoxy cinnamic acid (4), trans 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinnamic acid(trans isoferulic acid) (5)
Their biological activities are to be further studied.
