This research aimed at investigating Wolam Choi Ilha`s life and consciousness based on hermit view. He gave up his official life during the period when the order of neo-Confucianism began to fall, which had been the basis of Joseon, and selected a life of hermit by himself. Since it was a voluntary hermit, not forced by party strife or external pressure, accordingly, his own hermit view was early established.
The core of hermit view that he determined by himeself in < Wolamgui > was `Woomul(寓物)` and `Nakji(樂志)`. Woomul(寓物) for Choi Ilha was dependence(依支) on the nature, which aimed for unchanging and eternal thing, not targeting all natural objects. The point to clearly determining by reducing directing point at the nature was helpful for him to more clearly stick to(窺知) the aspect of his consciousness about hermit. Also, the practice aspect of Nakji(樂志), to accomplish his will for hermit can be divided into three types, which are Dokrak(獨樂), Sansuyuram, and Gyoyu.
Then, what is his purpose of retreat even by defining himself as a hermit, establishing his own view of hermit? He was a competent person enough to pass Hyangshi several times. Later, it is not certain whether he applied for the state exam or not, considering the remaining record, he was not appointed with state position, except Eumjik. He complimented Dojam and Yiwon`s hermit way, expressing it as a profound joy, however a decisive difference between Wolam and them was whether of government post. They quit their post and selected hermit, due to their own reason. Accordingly, Wolam seemed to have intended to define his self-regard as a hermit by establishing his own hermit view.
Also, the point that he lived a relation-oriented life of Confucianism through friendship or social activity can be said that he composed and shared life among those in similar position. It is presumed that lots of the unknown ordinary noblemen, who lived confidently in their own way during that period based on economic availability as Wolam, also could enhance self-regard through several ways.
