『유식이십론』 2~4송의 재고 = Reinterpreting the Viṃśikāvṛtti 2-4

국문 초록 (Abstract)

바수반두의 『유식이십론(唯識二十論)』(Viṃśikā Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi)은 대론자의 반론(pūrvapakṣa)과 그에 대한 재반론(uttarapakṣa)이 포함되는 인도의 철학적 논의를 다루는 고전 논서들의 특징적인 편집 형식을 보여주는 전형적인 사례이면서, 내용적으로는 ‘유식(唯識, vijñapti-mātratā)’이라는 유가행파의 핵심이론을 증명하고자 하는 뚜렷한 목적을 표방하는 논서이다. 이처럼 『유식이십론』 전체의 구성과 내용은 그런 바수반두의 논리적 전략에 따라 배치되고 편집된 결과물이라 할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 『유식이십론』 2송에서 나타나는 해석의 문제를 통해서 그것이 3~4송의 주석의 내용과 연관되는 지점을 재고하고자 한다. II장에서는 사전 작업으로서 Vś 2송에서 생략된 내용에 관해서 다룰 것이며, III장에서는 본격적으로 2송에서 일어나는 해석의 분기가 이후의 3~4송 해석에 미치는 영향에 대해서 다루고, 기존의 번역에 대해 약간의 수정을 제안하고자 한다. IV장에서는 앞장들의 해석을 바탕으로 바수반두가 VśV를 저술하면서 세웠던 논리적 전략에 있어서 초반부의 논의가 지니는 역할에 대해서 다루고, 2~4송에 대한 기존 번역이 일으킬 수 있는 오해와 그 실례를 논의할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Viṃśikā Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi or Viṃśikāvṛtti of Vasubandhu is characterized by the classic discourses dealing with Indian philosophical debates, including pūrvapakṣa and uttarapakṣa. And it is a work showing a clear purpose to prove the core theory of the Yogacāra Buddhism called ‘vijñaptimātra’ (唯識). The whole series of content in the Viṃśikā can be said to be the result of being arranged and edited according to the logical strategy of Vasubandhu.
In this paper, through the problem of interpretation appearing in the second stanza of the Viṃśikā, I would like to revisit the proofs related to the commentary of the 3rd and 4th stanzas. In Chapter II, I will deal with the omissions and the implications in the second stanza, and in Chapter III, cover the effect that interpretation of it may have on the commentary of the 3rd and 4th stanzas. In Chapter IV, based on the interpretations of the preceding chapters, I will discuss the role of the proofs at the beginning of the Viṃśikā, in terms of the logical strategy that Vasubandhu established while writing the text, and touch on an example of the misunderstanding and mistranslation of the Viṃśikāvṛtti 3-4.
