As Korea is steadily marching into the nest century, it has become very apparent that it must be an active member of the "global" community in order to maintain and increase the role it plays in world politics and economics. In order to facilitate these aspirations, the need for a stable and secure knowledge of a second language; primarily English, is as important now as ever. The ability, quality and speed of language acquisition are albeit important issues that should be addressed, but the issue that has the most impact and bearing on language acquisition is what is known as the motivational factor.
By examing the history processes, techniques and circumstance that existed in Korea, it is possible to see the motivation at those particular times, how it changed then and how it is changing now; relating to current problems.
It should be noted that motivation is not a one-sided argument, but in fact, is a shared responsibility between teacher and student. As with any subject, in order for the individual ability to successfully complete the task is heavily based on the desire to learn and to comprehend how that learning will benefit them in the future. Whereas the desire to learn is the responsibility of the student, the explanation and illustrating the rewards of achieving the goal rest on the shoulders of the instructor.
The goal of this paper is to shed light onto an aspect of that which has often been overshadowed by techniques and methodologies and to help and/or encourage instructors to create a better curricula for themselves and the students.
