      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

After the Opium war, so called 'Impact from the west' caused a stimulus and the consciousness of crisis in various parts of Chinese society, which also led to the significant changes in chinese philosophy and thoughts. Especially, even though there was 'the chinese revolution', the radical transformation in political system, chinese could not realize the purpose of 'the escaping from crisis', which became the main cause making some intellectuals actively paly an important role in 'New cultural movement',the reform movement of consciousness. In this progress, it was inevitable that those who argued to conserve chinese tradition collided with the opposing group insisting on the termination of all the tradition and seeking to the way to 'the comprehensive westernized reform '.
This article has the objective of reviewing one of the intensive disputes among chinese intellectuals,'Discourse on science and an outlook on the world'.
First, this paper tried to compare the different aptitudes towards western material civilization and spiritual civilization which was symbolized as science. Second, conduct classifying the three main intellectuals' groups, ① the advocates for comprehensive westernized reform who was also named as pro-science group ② the group insisting on conserving tradition who was also named as the fraction of pedantry ③ the marxists became more distinctive through the '5•4 movement' period's ideological separation. Finally, this parer made an attempt to inquire into each group's limitations and through this progress tried to reach more concrete understanding about those days' concerns that intellectuals had.
And we can also say that those disputes are still ongoing at the midst of the quite different worlds, the west and the orient, and those recently have generated a variety of discourses, although they have various extension and levels, such as 'the discourse on eastern Asia'. Therefore, this paper hopes that reviewing of the 1920's disputes in China could be an informative source for upcoming discourses on the value of east Asia.
