Daoist philosophy regards the “Dao” as the fundamental origin and
basis of all things in the universe. It advocates harmony with nature,
governance through non-action (wuwei), and a return to an unadorned and
authentic state of being—concepts that have profoundly shaped Chinese
philosophy, culture, and society. Daoist aesthetics, derived from the
philosophical foundations of Laozi and Zhuangzi, promote an attitude of
naturalness and non-interference toward beauty and art. This aesthetic
perspective has left a lasting influence across various fields, including
Chinese literature, calligraphy, painting, architecture, and garden design. In
the realm of dance, elements of Daoist thought can also be observed in
traditional Chinese folk and classical dance forms. With the growing body
of research and creative practice centered on Daoist philosophy, there has
been a corresponding increase in cultural and artistic productions,
signaling a resurgence of interest in Daoist concepts in the contemporary
art world. Moreover, the Daoist ideals of naturalness, non-action, and
spiritual return resonate deeply with the modern dance movement’s
emphasis on physical liberation and emotional freedom. “Wuwei,” one of
the core tenets of Daoist thought, refers not to doing nothing, but to
acting in accordance with the inherent patterns of nature and human
essence. Unlike deities in many religions that are personified and
purposeful, the Dao is impersonal; it generates all things without
controlling them, allowing nature to follow its own course of emergence,
transformation, and renewal. Thus, wuwei embodies a principle of action
that aligns with the flow of nature rather than imposing force upon it.
Since the 1960s, dance has undergone a series of radical
transformations, among which the most prominent is the shift in focus
from movement itself to the body. Contemporary dance has moved beyond
traditional techniques, aesthetics, and stylistic frameworks to explore the
wisdom of the body, its mechanisms of motion, its cultural significance,
and its potential for constructing subjectivity. This transformation has
imbued dance with intellectual depth, positioning it as a constructive form
of cultural practice. Daoist philosophy, as represented by Laozi and
Zhuangzi, offers a rich and profound discourse on the body. Broadly
speaking, Daoist views on the body emphasize the pursuit of balance and
harmony between body and mind, form and spirit, and the individual and
nature. The concept of wuwei (non-action) stresses an internal driving
force rather than external coercion. In dance, this implies that the dancer
should move from within—responding to bodily sensations and inner
emotions rather than mechanically executing steps. This internal orientation
infuses each movement with vitality and authenticity, creating a resonance
that can deeply move the audience. Furthermore, the Daoist state of wuwei
entails a heightened sense of awareness and perception, a quality that is
essential in contemporary dance. Through somatic awareness, dancers gain
a refined control over movement and rhythm, achieving a state of bodily
harmony. This perceptive ability enables dancers to improvise freely on
stage, expressing themselves with natural fluidity. Improvisation in
contemporary dance is thus closely aligned with the Daoists notion of
wuwei. It requires dancers to be fully present, relaxed, and open to the
spontaneous generation of movement guided by both the body and the
inner self. This creative state embodies the essence of wuwei, presenting
the dancer’s truest self and most genuine emotions in a way that is both
    powerful and profound.
This study aims to propose a choreographic approach that integrates
Daoist philosophy and aesthetic principles, exploring practical methods for
applying the aesthetics of wuwei (non-action) within contemporary dance
practices. By systematically analyzing the conceptual framework of Daoist
philosophy and the intrinsic meanings of wuwei aesthetics, the research
begins with a discussion of its historical context and cultural aspirations,
elucidating the philosophical value and cultural significance of wuwei
aesthetics. Building on this theoretical foundation, the study further
examines the external manifestations of Daoists aesthetics in artistic works,
identifying and distilling the core characteristics and aesthetic elements of
wuwei. In the empirical section, the research takes the dance piece Nothing
(無) as a case study, analyzing spatial composition, bodily movement, and
conceptual expression. Through this analysis, it summarizes the stylistic
features and expressive effects of dance works created under the aesthetic
guidance of Daoist wuwei, thereby validating the methodological applicability
and practical value of Daoists philosophy in dance creation.
This study investigates the application of Daoist wuwei (non-action)
philosophy in the performance and creation of modern dance. It not only
offers new creative perspectives for modern dance rooted in Eastern
philosophy, but also affirms the diversity and profound value of integrating
philosophical thought with dance as an artistic practice.
