This study established a comprehensive framework for biotop mapping that incorporates advanced biotop classification, value assessment, digital mapping, and three-dimensional visualization to improve the systematicity and objectivity of biotop mapping and expand its applicability in practical planning and management. The major findings of this study are as follows.
1) First, a standardized biotop classification system was established by reviewing the biotop classification guidelines of the Ministry of Environment, previous studies, and regional biotop mapping reports. Through the processes of selecting, integrating, separating, modifying, adding, and eliminating classification categories, the final classification system consisted of 13 major categories, 51 middle categories, and 121 minor categories.
2) For biotop value assessment, evaluation indicators were quantitatively and systematically organized to enhance objectivity. In the conservation aspect, 10 indicators were developed for biotop type assessment and 8 indicators for site assessment. In the natural experience and recreation aspect, 10 indicators were established for biotop type assessment and 7 indicators for site assessment. Furthermore, the evaluation process was structured using a cube model to visualize the assessment procedure and improve the clarity of the evaluation framework.
3) To verify the effectiveness of the revised classification and assessment methodology, a biotop map was produced for the study area used in a previous study (Sindong District, Daejeon Metropolitan City). Compared with the previous study, the revised methodology identified a greater number of biotop types and a higher number of high-value biotop classes.
4) The proposed classification and assessment methods were applied to the main study area in Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun. The biotop classification identified 14 major categories, 35 middle categories, and 63 minor categories. In the conservation-oriented biotop type assessment, 17 types were classified as Grade I, 10 as Grade II, and 12 as Grade III. In the natural experience and recreation-oriented assessment, 19 types were classified as Grade I, 10 as Grade II, and 13 as Grade III. For the conservation-oriented site assessment, 79 sites were identified as having exceptional significance for species and biotop conservation (Grades 1α and 1β), while 324 sites were assessed as having significant conservation value (Grades 2α, 2β, and 2γ). In the natural experience and recreation-oriented site assessment, 161 sites were evaluated as having exceptional significance for natural experience and recreation (Grades 1α and 1β), whereas 254 sites were assessed as having significant value (Grades 2α, 2β, and 2γ).
5) Based on the results obtained from the study area, procedures for digital mapping and three-dimensional visualization were developed. QGIS 3.40.0 was employed for digital mapping, while Blender 4.3.2 was used for three-dimensional visualization.
6) Finally, an integrated framework for biotop mapping was established by systematically connecting the processes of biotop classification, biotop value assessment, digital mapping, and three-dimensional visualization.
The proposed biotop mapping framework is expected to provide practitioners with an intuitive understanding of the relationships among the mapping stages while reducing errors and omissions during the mapping process. Furthermore, by proposing a methodology for creating three-dimensional biotop maps using Blender, this study demonstrates the potential applicability of biotop mapping to digital twin–based spatial planning and environmental management in the future.
