(A) study of the sickly heroine : patriarchy and hysteria in Mansfield Park

This thesis reads Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park through the lens of psychoanalysis and feminism, focusing on the heroine’s sickliness. I diagnose Fanny Price’s sickliness that have been attributed to be what made her unpopular among the readers of Mansfield Park as hysteria. Her bursts of crying, frequent headaches, fatigues, stubborn silence and blushes are interpreted to be hysteric symptoms which are a result of and a critique of patriarchal oppression in Mansfield Park. While the heroine’s legitimate expression against patriarchal oppression, which mainly takes the form of compulsive marriage, is her hysteric symptoms, they also serve as a resistance mechanism against the oppression. This thesis contributes to the criticism of the novel in that it re-diagnoses Fanny’s sickliness as hysteria and grapples with the critique her illness provides against patriarchy, which sheds light into the problematic character of Fanny Price which has triggered controversy among critics and readers.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 제인 오스틴의 『 맨스필드 파크 』를 정신분석학과 페미니즘의 시각에서 분석한다. 여주인공 패니 프라이스의 나약함과 병약함은 여러 독자들과 비평가들 사이에서 그녀를 제인 오스틴의 여주인공 중 가장 인기 없는 여주인공으로 만든 원인으로 지목되어 왔다. 본고는 이러한 패니 프라이스의 병약함에 주목하여, 그녀의 잦은 피로감, 두통, 울음, 침묵 등을 히스테리 증상으로 해석한다. 이러한 그녀의 히스테리아는 맨스필드 파크의 가부장적 억압에 따른 표현이자 가부장제에 대한 효과적인 비판이 된다. 본고는 패니 프라이스의 히스테리아를 통한 몸의 표현이 주로 개인의 의사에 반한 결혼의 강요로 나타나는 맨스필드의 가부장적 억압의 문제점을 드러낸다는 점을 밝힘으로써 문제적으로 여겨졌던 패니 프라이스의 나약함을 재조명하고자 한다.
