The Northern Limit Line (NLL) has been the key issue in the several armed clashes between North and South Korean navy vessels in the West Sea. After a review of the Armistice Agreement and the settlement of the NLL, this study concludes that the NLL should be recognized and defended as de facto military demarcation line (MDL) in the West Sea until North and South Korea negotiate and agree on a new MDL in the West Sea, that a new MDL in the West Sea should be negotiated as a part of the transformation of the armistice system into a peace system in the Korean peninsula, and that, in the meantime, North and South Korea have to begin to talk to establish the Joint Fishing Area and the Peace Area around the NLL to prevent further military conflict as the Summit Meeting between North and South Korea agreed in 2007.
