In order to provide basic data for career guidance, the current study investigated and analyzed career consciousness which could potentially help to instruct the rational career decision making for students attending at technical high schools.
To accomplish this purpose, the following research questions were arranged.
1. What is the background of entrance into a technical highschool?
2. How much difference of the recognition about technical highschool is there according to the different school year students attending at a technical high school?
3. How much difference of the interests about career is there according to the different school year students attending at a technical high school?
4. How much difference of the career planning after graduation from a technical high school is there according to the different school year students attending atg a technical high school?
5. What is the current situation of the career education for the students attending at a technical high school?
Students attending at 7 different technical high schools located in the 7 different areas of Seoul were sampled to answer these research questions. A total of 516 students composed of firsts grade students of 180, second grade students of 173, and third grade students of 173 was surveyed. Survey items of 40 containing 5 different areas were associated with background of entering technical highschool, recognition of technical high school, interests about career, career planning, and career education. The collected data from the each result were analyzed by SPSS/WIN(Ver.12). Chi-square was statistically employed to investigate the differences among 3 groups. ANOVA and Duncan test were also employed to investigate the relations of each variable. The main results were as follows.
First, as to the background of entering into the technical high schools, most students tended to enter into the technical high schools because of not by the inner motivation but by the academic achievements.
Second, as to the recognition of the technical high school, 44% (227 students) and 19% (98 students) of the students were satisfied and unsatisfied, respectively with studying in the technical high schools. There were no differences among 3 groups.
Third, as to the interests about career, more higher school year students tended to have a big concern of their own career compared to lower school year students. Eighty percent (414 students) of students thought that they should graduate from an upper level school like a two year junior college to get a good occupation.
Fourth, as to the career planning, there were no differences among different school year students. They wanted to be a professional technician. They were likely to consider their aptitude and vision first in a decision making of their career.
Lastly, there was no practical counseling service of career guidance for the students attending at technical high schools.
